Myriokephalon, Battle of
On 17 September 1176 the army of Manuel I Komnenos (q.v.) found itself trapped in a narrow pass by the forces of Kilij Arslan I (q.v.). When the day was over Manuel's army was in tatters, though not destroyed. However, what was destroyed were any subsequent plans to reconquer Asia Minor from the Seljuks (qq.v.). In retrospect, the battle was the most decisive for Byzantium since Mantzikert (qq.v.) in 1071.
